(am useing LinuxMint 9.10) had the same problem with ffmpeg + MPlayer
not working with DeVeDe, don't know if this will help you guys but after
I reinstall  MPlayer from:

https://launchpad.net/~rvm/+archive/mplayer

all works now :)
