Actually, it works fine when launched by remote e.g. via SSH with X11
forwarding enabled, but not locally.

When attempting to launch as root via a vcons or as a secondary
application within the desktop environment via an xterm, I don't get any
of the images. I also notice that most of my other GTK2+ applications
lack icons in their menus and toolbars.
