The issue is not solely with smplayer. I have the same problem with
kaffeine, which uses xine. If I disable the screensaver, the monitor is
powered down per my dpms settings. To be honest, i have no idea where
the bug lies. I do not believe it is in the media player but the issue
only surfaces while playing video. So I submitted a bug report for the
media player I use.
