Hi Martin

this is the bash shell text from your request in comment #2

user at HP-laptop:~$ id postgres
id: postgres: No such user
user at HP-laptop:~$ ls -ld /etc/ssl/private/
drwx--x--- 2 root ssl-cert 4096 2009-07-12 13:23 /etc/ssl/private/
user at HP-laptop:~$ sudo ls -l /etc/ssl/private/ssl-cert-snakeoil.key
[sudo] password for user:
-rw-r----- 1 root ssl-cert 887 2009-07-12 13:23 /etc/ssl/private/ssl-cert-snakeoil.key
user at HP-laptop:~$

Sorry to take so long to reply, I thought I had some how stuffed up the
config so I used Synaptic to do a complete removal including config
files and reinstall to hopefully start again - which got me nowhere, so
I gave up.

I started a fresh install on a different box and followed some
instructions I found via QGIS for setting up postgres for QGIS and it
worked on the other machine, so I just gave up on this one.

I don't know if the above is any use to you or not as I have now un-
installed the postgresql server packages. Note that I had originally
installed the postgis geographic location extentions package to create a
database for QGIS, if that makes any difference.

Thank you for your time, I greatly appreciate your efforts.

Jim
