Same for me. But I found a workaround:
* open nautilus (your file browser in gnome)
* browse to your images directory or create one and open it
* create a new bookmark (strg+d if you like or through the bookmarks menu in nautilus)
If you succeded to do this, your image directory should appear into the left view for locations and bookmarks. These locations are shown in the drop down menu of qemulator's main images directory settings dialog.
