OK, I had hdaps loaded, but was getting an error loading tp_smapi. In
the logs, I saw:

  karmic kernel: [98215.126609] thinkpad_ec: cannot claim IO ports
0x1600-0x161f... consider using force_io=1.

I ran:

  $  sudo rmmod tp_smapi hdaps thinkpad_ec
  ERROR: Module tp_smapi does not exist in /proc/modules
  ERROR: Module thinkpad_ec does not exist in /proc/modules
  $  sudo modprobe -a tp_smapi hdaps thinkpad_ec
  $

And received:

==> /var/log/syslog <==
  karmic kernel: [98293.587093] thinkpad_ec: thinkpad_ec 0.40 loaded.
  karmic kernel: [98293.591039] tp_smapi 0.40 loading...
  karmic kernel: [98293.595855] tp_smapi successfully loaded (smapi_port=0xb2).
  karmic kernel: [98293.598058] hdaps: LENOVO ThinkPad T61 detected, setting orientation 1
  karmic kernel: [98293.599338] hdaps: initial mode latch is 0x05
  karmic kernel: [98293.599577] hdaps: setting ec_rate=250, filter_order=2
  karmic kernel: [98293.599811] hdaps: device successfully initialized.
  karmic kernel: [98293.599885] input: ThinkPad HDAPS joystick emulation as /devices/virtual/input/input111

  karmic kernel: [98293.600129] hdaps: driver successfully loaded.

and verified it with:

  $  lsmod | grep -E "hdaps|tp_smapi|think"
  hdaps                  12708  0
  tp_smapi               27768  0
  thinkpad_ec             7640  2 hdaps,tp_smapi
  thinkpad_acpi          79356  0
  led_class               5256  3 iwlcore,thinkpad_acpi,sdhci
  nvram                   9356  1 thinkpad_acpi

Hope that helps.
