[Bug 348040] Re: blender 2.48a crash when using ffmpeg output

There was a related bug related corrected in 0.49b release of blender
(released september 3), I suppose that karmic you use and that is still
in developpment followed this version.

Anyway, I switched to getdeb version few time after this bug report (mars 24 2009), about 6 month ago, before Jaunty was released as stable, without any answer since. This is a good workaround for everyone:
