Hmm... Just noticed that there must have been a grub-pc update today (to
1.97~beta1-1ubuntu4). I ran sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
both before and during my experimenting and got a few updates, but I
didn't notice when the grub update came, so maybe my "fix" was just that
I installed the update...
