Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine

When doing jaunty->karmic (k)upgrade using "update-manager -d", the
upgrade of package wine failed, complaining about the entry
"kernel.maps_protect = 1" in the file /etc/sysctl.conf. This made the
update-manager to fail in the end, complaining about broken IO (log
available upon request). Fortunately, all the other packages were
installed.

Commenting that line in sysctl.conf let the upgrade process to complete after having run "dpkg --configure -a".
Karmic is finally installed, along with wine which is working okay (tested rapidly with VirtualDub).

wine 1.0.1-0ubuntu8
procps(sysctl) 1:3.2.8-1ubuntu3

Hope this helps, this is my first *ubuntu bug report.
