I also have this problem. It says:
Grub Loading.
then hard drive thrashing for about 7 seconds, then GRUB appears, I select what to boot (or wait 10 seconds) and hard drive thrashes for 1-2 more seconds.
I have ubuntu 9.10 on OCZ vertex 60gb SSD with ext4 / partition and swap partition.
On my hard drive I have winxp partition. ntfs data partition. small recovery fat32 partition. ubuntu 9.04 / partition, /home partition, swap partition.
With me having SSD, and ubuntu booting from SSD and supposedly GRUB should be on there, I should not have any hard drive thrashing at all.
I had 9.04 installed on SSD and old grub worked fine with hard drive, no thrashing at all.
