[Bug 462984] [NEW] authentication using shadow fails

Public bug reported:

Default install on Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS fails to authenticate local users
(using *any*:*passwd* in conserver.passwd) on the host when running as
user conservr. I noticed that it was failing to open /etc/shadow to
verify passwords - i'm not sure how the pam authentication works, but i
was not expecting this behavior.

The client merely shows "invalid password".

Workarounds:
Run conserver as root
Do not use *any*:*passwd* and expect it to work with shadow
Add conservr user to shadow group

Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS
conserver-server 8.1.16-1

** Affects: conserver (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
