Not sure, if this is relevant here. I had a long time ago similar
trouble with this monitor Samsung Syncmaster 226bw when using nv driver
with debian lenny.  Seems the monitor had problems with its edid.

At the time when the following patch became applied, my problems
dissapeared:

I wonder if nouveau driver also includes above patch.
