3) I expected that changes made via:

Edit -> Preferences

would persist immediately after hitting the "Close" button, after
exiting the Firefox application, and after an OS restart.

4)  Recently installed VMWare Server as per Ubuntu documentation page:

After successfully installing VMWare Server, Firefox no longer kept any
Preference changes via:

Edit -> Preferences

Tried restarted Firefox, restarting OS, no luck.
