Vacuuming the sqlite database helped a little bit ... If anyone else
wants to try this, you first install the sqlite3 package, and then (at
the command line)

$ sqlite3 ~/.config/banshee-1/banshee.db "VACUUM;"

I will play with gconf soon and report back.
