Well if one of you could become sort of independent, learn debian
packaging and help around that would be great. I bet a lot of users
would benefit from your contribution!
1. If you really think this package is worth updating AND that the
updated version is a bugfix only, without new features, then learn how
to make a patch and ask for a stable release update (aka SRU - there's
an article in ubuntu wiki).
2. New releases aren't always bug free, so stable releases wouldn't be
that stable if ubuntu introduced updates with bugs. Also,
volunteer-packages can't keep track of everything, they're real life
people with priorities. I'd at least thank them for trying to keep up
and wait patiently (or make a patch and try it myself), not put them
down!
3. You could also make a ppa (personal package archive) in launchpad
an make your own package and help others keep up with new software,
regardless of the new features and how stable the new software version
is.
This is just my opinion of course. :-)
