It happens to my installation too.
Chipset is Intel 945gme within a NC10 Samsung Netbook Laptop.

I have the remix installed and update the system frequently.

The Xserver installed:
xserver-xorg:
  Installiert: 1:7.4~5ubuntu18
  Kandidat: 1:7.4~5ubuntu18
  Versions-Tabelle:
 *** 1:7.4~5ubuntu18 0
        500 http://at.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
        500 ftp://ftp.tugraz.at jaunty/main Packages

As mentioned above after reboot the system comes up as usual, while the
system is running nothing changes on the external screen. (I am using
only the external screen)
