[Bug 446209] [NEW] Cannot install sun-java6-jre on Karmic beta (broken packages)

Public bug reported:

I tried to install sun-java6-jre on Karmic but got a message about
broken packages.

Output of lsb_release -rd:
Description:	Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release:	9.10

Output of apt-cache policy sun-java6-jre:
sun-java6-jre:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 6-15-1
  Version table:
     6-15-1 0
        500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/multiverse Packages

Should install the Sun Java 6 runtime environment but instead got this output:
$ sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree       
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

  sun-java6-jre: Depends: java-common (>= 0.24) but it is not installable
                 Depends: sun-java6-bin (= 6-15-1) but it is not going to be installed or
                          ia32-sun-java6-bin (= 6-15-1) but it is not installable
                 Recommends: gsfonts-x11 but it is not installable
