Are you positive that you have the partner repository enabled?

$ apt-cache policy acroread
acroread:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 9.1.0-7jaunty2
  Version table:
     9.1.0-7jaunty2 0
        500 http://archive.canonical.com karmic/partner Packages

Make sure you have the following line in /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu karmic partner

       Status: Confirmed => Incomplete
