It would seem that the aforementioned fix only worked for one shutdown
restart cycle. after restarting a second time the problem returned.

I then removed the startup entry from startup applications dialog, and
also unchecked the 'Start GNOME Do at login.' box. after a restart,
start gnome do again manually, and recheck the box. after two reboots,
it still works.
