I just installed freeciv-client-gtk_2.1.10-1~karmic1_amd64.deb

civclient --version
Freeciv version 2.1.10 gui-gtk-2.0

and it is mostly better.  I had no problems with research items, and
that was the main issue.  Thanks.

Quitting still has a problem: it takes forever and I have to use "force
quit".  I just ran this new version with strace and after I hit quit and
confirmed with "yes", strace is spewing out

nanosleep({0, 100000000}, {0, 100000000}) = 0
nanosleep({0, 100000000}, {0, 100000000}) = 0
nanosleep({0, 100000000}, {0, 100000000}) = 0
nanosleep({0, 100000000}, {0, 100000000}) = 0
nanosleep({0, 100000000}, {0, 100000000}) = 0

Although annoying, that isn't as big of a deal because I rarely quit.
