Thanks, but still does not work, even on Karmic.
Steps to reproduce this:

- sudo aptitude install angband
- angband -mx11
- observe only one window with ncurse interface. 
- compare with the man page: 
man angband
....
       This version of Angband has been compiled with both ncurses and the X Windowing system.  and hence can be played on a  vir‐tual console as well as under X.  In the latter case, the game pulls up multiple windows.
... 

I think one problem is that the graphics tiles are not included in the package. 
So two ways to fix this: 
* either, include graphic tiles in the following versions of the package.
* or, update the man page to reflect that the graphic option will not work without adding manually the appropriate graphic files. For instance: 
- remove the sentence: "In the latter case, the game pulls up multiple windows."
- in line "       -g        Request graphics mode ", add "(graphic tile files  must be added manually in directory xxx"
