I had the same problems as b355_etude.  I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10.
After install I ran the update tool and was offered a choice to change
the grub configuration to the developer's version or keep the current.
I chose to view the differences.   From the differences window I hit
"cancel" thinking it would drop me back to the previous screen.  Instead
it went forward and but failed to complete the upgrade.  Afterwards I
ran "sudo dpkg --configure -a" through synaptic and this seems to have
fixed it.
