I've tried the attached file (Puppet.wmv), and it plays back just fine
with ffplay.

Tested with libavcodec-extra-52, Version: 4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu4.

I've also tried vlc and totem, all players play the attached file just
fine for me.

have you perhaps installed some ppa that replaced ffmpeg related
packages?
