[Bug 486972] [NEW] Labels fail to print to Xerox Phaser 6100 making it not responding

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: glabels

Glabels 2.2.5-0ubuntu1 on my 64-bit Karmic install fails to print to my
Xerox Phaser 6100 network printer making it not responding with status
"Ready" indicated on printer's front panel. The printer returns to
normal operation only after the job is removed from the queue.

This behaviour is observed for colour labels as per attached sample. It
does not matter whether I choose "Color" or "Greyscale" mode of the
printer. The only way to print the label is to change all colours to
black on a label itself, and this way it can be printed out in black and
white.

I had also tried printing to PDF file. The PDF file looks allright on
the screen but will not print with the same result (printer silently
stops responding with no indication of a job being processed).

I don't think there is a problem with the printer driver for the
following reason.

1. I did not encounter any problem with my printer when printing complex
colourful booklets from OpenOffice.org and from PDF, including PDF files
downloaded off the net. No problems printing from Firefox in colour
either.

2. There was a Splix Error when attempting to print in colour in early
Splix version released with Ubuntu 9.04 (no application could print in
colour, and the Splix Error message was displayed). So I kept separate
machine with Ubuntu 8.10 install and working printer driver as a backup.
This enabled me to print to PDF on 9.04 in Glabels, and then to print
out those PDFs on Ubuntu 8.10 machine, all in colour.

But this time this trick did not work. PDF files created with Glabels
2.2.5 on Ubuntu 9.10 failed to print on my backup 8.10 machine with the
same result (printer not responding). There is a consistency between two
different implementations of the driver in this regard.

Since rendering to printers like Xerox Phaser 6100 is a rather complex
process, I would really appreciate your collaboration so that the source
of the problem could be troubleshooted. Attached is the sample label
with its corresponding template.

Kind regards,
Lex
