Although I have not had any freezes, I get the same errors at boot with
2.6.31-15-generic:

I had no acceleration at all after I upgraded from jaunty to karmic, but
I did get video to sort of work without any change to xorg.conf by
simply adding the kernel parameter xforcevesa.  Video playback still
pauses and stutters, however.
