I confirm that installing manually php-pear will allow php5-symfony1.0
to be configured properly. The fix in the debian packaging seems then
clear:
diff symfony-1.0.20/debian/control symfony-modified/debian/control

< Depends: libapache2-mod-php5 | libapache-mod-php5 | php5-cgi | php5, php5-cli
---
