[Bug 483536] [NEW] Opening galculator crashes Gnome System Monitor 2.28.1

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: galculator

Opening galculator immediately terminates a running System Monitor panel
utility in Karmic. Also, if galculator is already up, attempting to
start System monitor fails. It briefly displays, and then quits
immediately.

Other side-effects noticed are:
1. In Applications => Accessories, the galculator launcher does not manage to have an icon.
2. galculator here is started from a panel launcher. The first choice of assigned icon refused to display. 
     Second choice, from /usr/share/pixmaps/galculator.svg  worked OK
3. If launched from a terminal, it runs OK - but the terminal messages are..

Confirmed by at least one other in discussion at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1327816

The installed version is listed as galculator 1.3.4-1ubuntu1, a GTK+ 2.0
based calculator.

System is Ubuntu 9.10. Processor is Intel i7-860.
