I'm afraid this is beyond my control. The design team have instructed me
to make GRUB as silent as possible
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopExperienceTeam/KarmicBootExperienceDesignSpec#Bootloader).
The Shift thing was the best I could manage.
