FWIW having upgraded to Karmic, this happens all the time when I start
my work machine now. So many programs loaded from session it's hard to
say which is at fault, it might be firefox or thunderbird or eclipse or
nautilus, who knows.

What does happen is all text input gets sluggish afterwards, at least
until I kill -9 scim-bridge (which doesn't last long as it seems to
respawn).

Might just go ahead and uninstall the whole thing until this is fixed :(
