An alternative update site will just cause the same problem.  You need
to increase the amount of memory Eclipse is allowed to use.  Edit
/usr/lib/eclipse/eclipse.ini.  Find the line that says -Xmx256m and
change it to the maximum amount you want Eclipse to use.  For example, a
maximum of 512 MB is -Xmx512m
