[Bug 475293] [NEW] Upgrade to Karmic completely broke password prompt for cryptdisks at boot

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cryptsetup

After updating from Jaunty to Karmic, I can't boot my PC normally any
more.

1. X-Windows login prompt appears even before the passphrase for my
encrypted /home can be entered

2. After switching back to the first text console with Ctrl-Alt-F1, the passphrase prompt is still broken:
-> I have to press the enter-button before the passphrase can be entered, but there is no indication of this.
If I don't press enter before, the passphrase is displayed clearly visible on the screen (!!),
mangled in between some other boot messages.

3. When the passphrase is accepted, the boot process doesn't continue normally:
-> In approx. four out of five boot attempts, the boot just stalls after the cryptdisk has been mapped correctly.
KDE can be started after switching to the graphic login prompt, but not all system services have been started
(e.g. no "getty" text mode consoles are started)
-> Seemingly randomly, i.e. every fifth time, the system continues to start normally after entering the
    passphrase for the early cryptdisk.

This is my /etc/crypttab:
crypthome /dev/sda7 none luks,cipher=aes-xts-plain
swap /dev/sda2 /dev/urandom swap

I'm running a vanilla 2.6.31.5 kernel.
I don't use an initramfs.

I've confirmed by booting into a copy of Jaunty (disk snapshot made exactly before the upgrade to Karmic),
exatly the same configuration works, with the same kernel.

Because the password is sometimes displayed in clear text, I would even
consider this a security risk.

** Affects: cryptsetup (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
