Subscribing ubuntu-sru for the karmic side of this.

Martin, would appreciate some input on this proposed change prior to
upload, since it does carry significant risk; an alternative approach
would be to also hook the upstart job into a udev rule at the same time,
to completely eliminate the raciness.
