I have the same problem with tvtime at Karmic 9.10 on Intel 852GM and
AVerMedia Cardbus TV/Radio E501R. Although, the command

$ mplayer -vo gl tv:// -tv device=/dev/video0

works (for me). At least, I've got a playback screen.
