Same problem with two Dell laptops with integrated Graphics.

... but see this bug has more activity.

I'm waiting for the next time my screen goes unresponsive to test out a
temporary workaround.

I've created a Gnome keyboard shortcut that calls "vbetool dpms on",
which I hope will turn the screen power back on.
