Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

Symptoms:
I installed ubuntu 9.10 on a USB stick. When i boot it, GRUB gives me its menu. I hit Enter to select default menu item, and... nothing seems to happen. I try to go to another menu item, and the selection doesn't move. I try doing something for several seconds more, and finally screen changes to the bootsplash and the boot starts.
Possible reason:
The problem is that GRUB didn't tell me that it at least had processed my input and that kernel&initrd were being loaded. This behaviour makes the user think GRUB is hung. It is especially misleading if GRUB has much data to read from disk (in my case not even disk - slow SSD), e.g. when the kernel is compiled with debug info.
Possible solution:
It would be better if GRUB had some progress indication, e.g. as isolinux has - something like this:
Loading kernel.......................................
Loading initrd................................................................................................................................
Starting...
