"dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -b -uc" manages to create debs on my
system, so I am attaching a list of packages on my system.

Martin, it seems the package 'automake' is responsible for the install-
sh that configure is dying on for you. Is installing that package
sufficient to build debs?
