[Bug 470691] [NEW] Unable to load icons, displays error icon instead

Binary package hint: mail-notification

Since upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 from 9.04, the mail-notification tray
icon always displays as a white page with a red cross in the middle, and
I get errors such as the following on the console:

I notice that the version of mail-notification in 9.10
(5.4.dfsg.1-1ubuntu1) hasn't changed from 9.04, so suspect this is a
packaging problem or even a bug in another package (but wouldn't know
how to diagnose it).

I'm running mail-notification in a KDE desktop, if that makes any
difference.

My GNOME icon theme is set to the default:
$ gconftool -u /desktop/gnome/interface/icon_theme
$ gconftool -g /desktop/gnome/interface/icon_theme
Humanity

The files for the 'missing' icons are actually available on my system, eg:
$ locate stock_inbox
/usr/share/icons/gnome/16x16/stock/net/stock_inbox.png
/usr/share/icons/gnome/24x24/stock/net/stock_inbox.png
/usr/share/icons/gnome/48x48/stock/net/stock_inbox.png
$ dpkg -S /usr/share/icons/gnome/24x24/stock/net/stock_inbox.png

$ dpkg -l gnome-icon-theme
