Same problem also here. Sympa failed to upgrade properly from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10.

Problems with accessing mysql database - never mind if upgrading from
the previous version or attempting at fresh install with new mysql
database. "Database  defined in sympa.conf has not the right structure
or is unreachable" is the error message I get.

Downgrade to the version of sympa included in 6.04 seems to have provide
an emergency quick fix.
