smplayer tries to identify the mplayer version, but if it identifies as
"MPlayer UNKNOWN-4.4.1", how can smplayer know what version it is? It's
impossible.

You should send a bug report against the mplayer package instead, as
mplayer is not displaying the correct version number.

(Although I installed the mplayer package in karmic and it didn't have
this issue)
