I did a complete removal (Synaptic) then reinstalled (which returned
error 1).

I get an error if I try to reconfigure per instructions in the old gpsd
configuration (but maybe these no longer apply):

walter at waltld7:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure gpsd
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: gpsd is broken or not fully installed
