[Bug 468907] [NEW] desktop crashes to black screen

Public bug reported:

After upgrade to ubuntu 9.10, most of the time desktop crashes to black
screen with blinking cursor in top left corner.  No response to keyboard
or mouse.  Crash occurs within 1 minute of desktop display after re-
boot, otherwise works OK.
