I see you are running the -intel driver from xorg-edgers. I assume you
get the same behaviour for Jaunty without any updates?

Could you add the line 
  Option "ModeDebug" "true" 
to the "Device" section of your xorg.conf and upload the Xorg.0.log you get after logging out and in again?

Since it works when the external monitor is connected via DVI, could you
(with the same xorg.conf) connect the DVI monitor and attach Xorg.0.log
from that and the output of `xrandr --verbose` here?
