Overcame the refusal to downgrade mysql-server-5.1 to 5.0 in the end by
deleting  /var/lib/mysql/debian-5.1.flag. Then completely removed mysql-
server and reinstalled. Now everything is lovely.

But why does drupal try to determine the server version? I find it hard
to believe it would not work with 5.1.
