As a short term solution, simply disable EDID:

Section "Device"
    ...
    Option      "IgnoreEDID" "True"
EndSection

I believe this will force it over into using DDC routines (which is how
it used to work, and may explain why it regressed in Intrepid ->
Jaunty).
