[Bug 378314] [NEW] Umlauts not working for java applications.

Public bug reported:

I have a problem inputting umlauts into java applications: I discovered
it first in OpenOffice, but it seems all java applications are affected:
in most software I can type an umlaut, e.g. äëü, by pressin AltGr, then
the letter, then ". In java applications nothing appears. I am using a
british standard keyboard layout, with kde 3.5 (kubuntu 8.04).
