The solution offered above by Xoan works for me like a charm.

I have a desktop with Asus P5KPL motherboard.
OS Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit, kernel 2.6.28-11-generic
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU     E4500  @ 2.20GHz
Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT, with NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module  180.44 installed
