I have the same problem. Totem & vlc immediately shut themselves down as soon as a video begins.
 lspci results : VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
                       Compaq Desktop PC   running Ubuntu Jaunty 
                        Same hardware running Intrepid had no problems.
