I can confirm that this is an Ubuntu problem, and this bug is invalid.  
I am now onto Karmic. Sound works for me using OSS but not alsa, where I have either no sound or broken sound, depending on pulseaudio config. There is a Ubuntu bug for this. 

They have also removed asoundconf from alsa-utils, which is very
annoying.
