Thanks for getting back to this one. I have added the following two
Option lines in xorg.conf, and they allow me to use EXA:

Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
	Option 		"MigrationHeuristic" 	"smart"
	Option		"EXANoComposite"	"Yes"
EndSection

This works in Jaunty and also in Karmic - Wine screen updates complete
correctly even when compiz is running.
