I think this is the same bug as in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc/+bug/365638  This bug also
affects me.

Distro: Ubuntu 64bit
Release: 9.04

$apt-cache policy vlc
vlc:
  Installed: 0.9.9a-2ubuntu1
  Candidate: 0.9.9a-2ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 0.9.9a-2ubuntu1 0

I get the same error message with:
VLC media player 1.0.0-pre1 Goldeneye
VLC version 1.0.0-pre1 Goldeneye
Compiled by me at desktop.
Compiler: gcc version 4.3.3 (Ubuntu 4.3.3-5ubuntu4) 

Backtrace in gdb for both versions of vlc gives:
